Tom Hickey talks about the importance of giving back
When my wife Nelda and I first moved to Posey County, we weren't sure if we would like it. But we assured each other that we would try the area for five years and could always move again if we wanted. Well, those five years have turned into thirty-six, and we've never regretted our decision to stay on. Posey County has provided us with countless blessings and opportunities, so the decision to enhance our level of support for the community we've come to love was a "no brainer" for us. And because I've been involved with the Posey County Community Foundation for more than 15 years, the mechanism we chose was a "no brainer" for us, too.
My involvement with the community foundation goes back to its beginning in 1992. During that time, I've served for several years as chair of the grants and distribution committee, two years as president of the board of trustees and, most recently, as chair of the needs committee. These experiences have instilled in me a firm confidence in the purpose and vision of our foundation, so much so that Nelda and I created an unrestricted fund to help our community.
We like know that, because it's unrestricted, the Tom and Nelda Hickey Fund will help the foundation address a variety of needs in our community—those we know about today and those that will surely arise in the future. We also like knowing that decisions about how the Hickey Fund can best meet the needs of our community will be made by the foundation's board, which is made up of people, like me and Nelda, who live and work in Posey County and care deeply about making a difference here.
One of the best things about creating an endowment fund is knowing that it will continue to support the community we care about, even after we've gone. Nelda and I are proud to know that, at least in our small way, we are helping support Posey County for good, forever.
