Scholarships and Criteria

The Community Scholarship Program is active from November through June each school year. The information contained on this page is NOT to be considered current at any other time.

The Foundation administers separate scholarship funds established by individuals, families, corporations, and organizations to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program. Eligibility, criteria, and supplemental requirements are different for each scholarship. Byron and Lila Brenton Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by the Metropolitan School District of North Posey County in memory of former school superintendent Byron Brenton and his wife.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Posey High School with a minimum 2.5 grade point average (4.0 scale) in core subjects (English, math, social studies, and science) planning to attend any two-year or four-year post-secondary accredited school. Although education is the preferred course of study, other majors will be considered.

Selection Criteria: Financial need is a major criterion for selection. Selection will also be based on strong history of involvement in community service and/or athletics.

Supplemental Requirements:

Cash Family Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Michael G. and Brenda J. Cash.

Eligibility Criteria:  Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) planning to pursue a healthcare degree (e.g. medicine, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy) at any accredited college or university. 

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form, financial need, and the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements: 
1.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).

CountryMark Technical Trade Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by the CountryMark.

Eligibility Criteria: Residents of Posey County, Indiana, who are graduating seniors of an accredited high school and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (4.0 scale). Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree in electrical maintenance, electronics and computer technology, mechanical maintenance, or welding at the Evansville campus of either Ivy Tech Community College or ITT Technical Institute.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and the letters of recommendation.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Two letters of recommendation - one from a school teacher and the other from a school counselor attesting to applicant's skills, abilities, and interest in his or her chosen college major.
2.  Official grade transcript.
3.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

Award Amount: $4,500. The scholarship is intended to cover tuition and required fees only and will be paid to the recipient's chosen college each semester until the total award amount is expended provided that the recipient remains in good standing with his or her college. Recipient must submit to the Community Foundation Alliance his/her tuition statement and grade report each semester until the total amount of the award is expended.


Herb and Betty Curry Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Herbert L. and Betty M. Curry.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Posey County high school pursuing post-secondary education in music (vocal or instrumental), music education, or the performing arts. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale).

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s).

Kevin Dillon North Posey Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by the family of Kevin Dillon.

Eligibility Criteria:  Graduating seniors of North Posey High School planning to pursue post-secondary education at any accredited college, university or technical/vocational school. 

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form, financial need, and the required essay.

Gillenwater Scholarship (College Scholarship Award)
Annual renewable scholarship created by William Gillenwater III to encourage Posey County high school students to further their education, to recognize academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating high school seniors of any Posey County high school enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree at an accredited four-year degree granting institution. Applicants must be in the upper third of their high school senior class.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on scholastic record, evidence of leadership, career plans and objectives, and the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements: 
1.  Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages).
2.  Official grade transcript.
3.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

Renewal Details:  Renewable for consecutive sophomore, junior and senior years if recipient has maintained full-time status and a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) during the freshman and ensuing years. Gillenwater Scholarship (Junior College or State-Supported Technical College Scholarship Award)
Annual renewable scholarship created by William Gillenwater III to encourage Posey County high school students to further their education, to recognize academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating high school seniors of any Posey County high school enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course of study leading to a two-year degree or certificate at an accredited junior college or State-supported technical college.   

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on scholastic record, evidence of leadership, career plans and objectives, and the required essay.

Health Professions Scholarship
Annual renewable scholarship created by anonymous donors to encourage Mt. Vernon High School students to pursue a degree in healthcare and to use their knowledge and skills to benefit tri-state communities after graduation.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School with a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) pursuing a two- or four-year degree at any accredited college or university in Indiana, Western Kentucky (which offers in-state tuition to Indiana residents) or Wabash Valley College in Southeastern Illinois.  Applicants must be planning to pursue a major course of study in healthcare including, but not limited to, nursing, pre-medicine, occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, pre-dentistry, or pre-optometry.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Original essay (200 words or fewer) responding to the following: "Why Healthcare?" 
2.  Official grade transcript.
3.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

Renewal Details: Renewable for consecutive sophomore, junior and senior years provided recipient has maintained full-time status and a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) during the freshman and ensuing years.  Recipients must continue to major in a healthcare course of study in order to remain eligible for renewal awards - documentation from transcripts and/or faculty advisors will be required upon application for renewal.  Renewal awards may differ from the original award amount. Katie Kanowsky Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Frank and Kathy Kanowsky and friends in memory of their daughter, to encourage North Posey High School students to pursue higher education and to use their knowledge and skills to benefit tri-state communities after graduation.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Posey High School with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (4.0 scale). Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree at Murray State University upon high school graduation. 

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on applicant's level of involvement in sports, band, academic teams, or school clubs, the letter of recommendation, and the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Written essay (not to exceed one typed page or 400 words) explaining why applicant believes he or she is the most qualified candidate for the scholarship award.
2.  Letter of recommendation from a teacher or coach attesting to applicant's involvement in school activities and/or sports and evidence of responsibility, maturity, and character. 
3.  Official grade transcript.

William H. Keck Leadership Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by the family of William H. Keck.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School planning full-time enrollment in a four-year program at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on academic achievement (SAT/ACT scores, class rank, grade point average, degree of difficulty in class strength, and academic honors), school involvement and leadership (student leadership, sports, plays, band, committees, student council, etc.), community involvement (church, neighborhood, volunteering, scouts, nonprofit organization activities, and employment history), and the required essay.

Kiwanis Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club in honor of Phil Ray for his many contributions and service to Kiwanis, the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon, the students and staff of West Elementary School, and the community of Mt. Vernon.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School who have been members of the Mt. Vernon High School Key Club for a minimum of one year and who are pursuing post-secondary education at a college, university or technical school. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in academic achievement, initiative, dependability, leadership, and service to the Mt. Vernon High School Key Club and to the community.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s).

Supplemental Requirements:

Mac McCutchan Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by the children of Mac McCutchan in memory of their father.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Posey County high school enrolled in a two- or four-year degree program in agriculture and/or family and consumer services. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) and must have participated as a member of 4-H for five years and/or FFA for three years.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on the required essay (40 percent) and involvement in 4-H, FFA and community activities (60 percent).

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Essay (200 words or fewer) on how applicants see their future developing in the field of agriculture and/or family and consumer services.
2.  Official grade transcript.

James W. Moore Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Kent, Greg, and Keith J. Moore in memory of their father.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School pursuing post-secondary education in industrial arts.

North Star Scholarship (Not awarding new scholarship in 2010)
Annual renewable scholarship created by an anonymous donor.

Eligibility Criteria:
Graduating seniors of North Posey High School with a minimum 3.0 grade point average planning to attend any accredited college or university. Applicants must demonstrate great financial need.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s).

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  A minimum of two letters of recommendation from school personnel, church leaders, the business community, or others knowledgeable about the applicant.

Rosella and Doyle Oursler Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Doyle Oursler in memory of his wife Rosella.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Posey High School who are residents of Smith Township, Indiana, and who are pursuing post-secondary education (four-year, two-year, or technical college). Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale).

Posey County Co-op Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by the Posey County Co-op.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating high school seniors who are residents of Posey County, Indiana, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale).  Applicants must be planning to pursue post-secondary education in agriculture, electrical maintenance, electronics and computer technology, mechanical maintenance, or welding at any accredited college, university or technical/vocational school. 

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and the required essay.

George and Peggy Rapp Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of New Harmony High School.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on excellence in academic achievements and the required essay.

Oscar and Helen Uebelhack Agriculture Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by David K., Dennis, and Jon Uebelhack in memory of their parents.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School pursuing post-secondary education in agriculture or animal sciences. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) or above.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s).

Margaret Corbin Wathen Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Tom Wathen in memory of his wife.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Posey County high school planning to pursue a major in post-secondary music or music education.

Whitney Wehr Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created by Greg and Bridget Wehr in memory of their daughter.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School with a maximum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale). Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree in elementary education at any accredited college or university.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on applicant's history of working hard to achieve aspirations and goals, high moral character, academic performance, and the required essay.

Supplemental Requirements:
1.  Statement of Perseverance (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages) describing the effort and diligence involved in order to pursue past and/or future aspirations and goals.
2.  Letter of recommendation in support of the applicant's high moral character (e.g. examples of applicant's demonstration of ethics, honesty, integrity, etc.)
3.  Official grade transcript.
4.  Community Scholarship Program Certification Form.

Robby Wilson Memorial Scholarship
Annual scholarship created in memory of Robby Wilson by his father, Tim Wilson, his sisters, Jodi Moore and Wendy Wilson, and his brother, Jason Wilson.

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating seniors of New Harmony High School with a minimum 2.5 grade point average (4.0 scale) in English, math, social studies, and science with plans to attend any two- or four-year degree-granting institution.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on financial need, level of involvement in community service and/or athletics, hardship situations, and the required essay. Preference will be given to students planning to major in world history, business, foreign language, or areas related to writing.
