Scholarships and Criteria
The Community Scholarship Program is active from December 1 through June 30 each school year. The information contained on this page is NOT to be considered current at any other time. Byron and Lila Brenton Memorial Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the Metropolitan School District of North Posey County in memory of former school superintendent Byron Brenton and his wife. Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Posey High School with a minimum 2.5 grade point average (4.0 scale) in core subjects (English, math, social studies, and science) planning to attend any two-year or four-year post-secondary accredited school. Although education is the preferred course of study, other majors will be considered. Financial need is a major criterion for selection. Selection also will be based on strong history of involvement in community service and/or athletics. Supplemental Requirements: Completion of the "Financial Assistance Questionnaire." Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $3,400.
CountryMark Technical Trade Scholarship Supplemental Requirements: Two letters of recommendation - one from a school teacher and the other from a school counselor attesting to applicant's skills, abilities, and interest in his or her chosen college major. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Submission Instructions: If you are not currently attending a Posey County high school, please mail or deliver your application packet (plus one copy) to the Posey County Community Foundation, Old National Bank Building, 402 Main Street, PO Box 746, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620. Otherwise, please submit application documents to your high school guidance counselor. Award Amount: $4,500. The scholarship is intended to cover tuition and required fees only and will be paid to the recipient's chosen college each semester until the total award amount is expended provided that the recipient remains in good standing with his or her college. Herb and Betty Curry Scholarship Annual scholarship created by Herbert L. and Betty M. Curry. Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Posey County high school pursuing post-secondary education in music (vocal or instrumental), music education, or the performing arts. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages). Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $1,000. Gillenwater Scholarship (College Scholarship Award) Annual renewable scholarship created by William Gillenwater III to encourage Posey County high school students to further their education, to recognize academic achievement of those graduating from high school and continuing their education, and to motivate recipients to achieve maximum scholastic and vocational potential. Criteria: Graduating high school seniors of any Posey County high school enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree at an accredited four-year degree granting institution. Applicants must be in the upper third of their high school senior class. Selection will be based on scholastic record, evidence of leadership, and career plans and objectives. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008.
Award Amount: $1,000. Renewable for consecutive sophomore, junior and senior years if recipient has maintained full-time status and a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) during the freshman and ensuing years. Total awards will not exceed $4,000. Renewal award amounts may differ from the original award. Criteria: Graduating high school seniors of any Posey County high school enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course of study leading to a two-year degree or certificate at an accredited junior college or State-supported technical college. Applicants must be in the upper half of their high school senior class. Selection will be based on scholastic record, evidence of leadership, and career plans and objectives. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $500. Renewable for a second year if recipient has maintained full-time status and a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) during the college freshman year. Total awards will not exceed $1,000. Renewal award amounts may differ from the original award. William H. Keck Leadership Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the family of William H. Keck. Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School planning full-time enrollment in a four-year program at Indiana University-Bloomington. Selection will be based on academic achievement (SAT/ACT scores, class rank, grade point average, degree of difficulty in class strength, and academic honors), school involvement and leadership (student leadership, sports, plays, band, committees, student council, etc.), community involvement (church, neighborhood, volunteering, scouts, nonprofit organization activities, and employment history), and the required essay. Kiwanis Memorial Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club in honor of Phil Ray for his many contributions and service to Kiwanis, the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon, the students and staff of West Elementary School, and the community of Mt. Vernon. Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School who have been members of the Mt. Vernon High School Key Club for a minimum of one year and who are pursuing post-secondary education at a college, university or technical school. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in academic achievement, initiative, dependability, leadership, and service to the Mt. Vernon High School Key Club and to the community. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Mac McCutchan Memorial Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the children of Mac McCutchan in memory of their father. Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Posey County high school enrolled in a two- or four-year degree program in agriculture and/or family and consumer services. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) and must have participated as a member of 4-H for five years and/or FFA for three years. Selection will be based on the required essay (40 percent) and involvement in 4-H, FFA and community activities (60 percent). Supplemental Requirements: Essay (200 words or fewer) on how applicants see their future developing in the field of agriculture and/or family and consumer services. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $1,730. James W. Moore Scholarship Annual scholarship created by Kent, Greg, and Keith J. Moore in memory of their father. Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School pursuing post-secondary education in industrial arts. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages). Application Deadline: February 1, 2008.
Award Amount: $160. Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Posey High School with a minimum 3.0 grade point average planning to attend any accredited college or university. Applicants must demonstrate great financial need. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Supplemental Requirements: A minimum of two letters of recommendation from school personnel, church leaders, the business community, or others knowledgeable about the applicant. Completion of the "Financial Assistance Questionnaire." Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $2,000. Renewable for up to four consecutive years provided recipient maintains a minimum 3.0 grade point average and continues to demonstrate financial need. Renewal award amounts may differ from the original award. Rosella and Doyle Oursler Scholarship Annual scholarship created by Doyle Oursler in memory of his wife Rosella. Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Posey High School who are residents of Smith Township, Indiana, and who are pursuing post-secondary education (four-year, two-year, or technical college). Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Posey County Community Foundation Technical-Vocational Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the Board of Trustees of the Posey County Community Foundation. Criteria: Posey County residents pursuing advanced training in a vocational field such as electrical, mechanical, welding, or carpentry at any accredited college, university, or vocational technical school. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors, college students, or anyone with a high school diploma/equivalency certificate. Applicants must demonstrate capability in their chosen vocational field and financial need. High school seniors and college students must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Posey County Co-op Scholarship Annual scholarship created by the Posey County Co-op. Criteria: Graduating high school seniors who are residents of Posey County, Indiana, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale). Applicants must be planning to pursue post-secondary education in agriculture, electrical maintenance, electronics and computer technology, mechanical maintenance, or welding at any accredited college, university or technical/vocational school. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and the required essay. George and Margaret Rapp Scholarship Annual scholarship created by George F. and Margaret M. Rapp. Criteria: Graduating seniors of New Harmony High School. Award Amount: Four awards of $1,000 each. Bobby Rogge Memorial Scholarship Annual scholarship created in memory of Bobby Rogge by his father and stepmother, Bob and Cindy Rogge. Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Posey County high school planning to attend a two- or four-year institution or accredited technical school. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Craig Andrew Spradley Memorial Scholarship Annual scholarship created by Andrew Q. and Christine L. Spradley in memory of their son. Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Posey High School with a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) planning to attend a two- or four-year college, university or technical school. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Oscar and Helen Uebelhack Agriculture Scholarship Annual scholarship created by David K., Dennis, and Jon Uebelhack in memory of their parents. Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School pursuing post-secondary education in agriculture or animal sciences. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) or above. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Margaret Corbin Wathen Scholarship Annual scholarship created by Tom Wathen in memory of his wife. Criteria: Graduating seniors of any Posey County high school planning to pursue a major in post-secondary music or music education. Selection will be based on all sections of the application form and on the supplemental document(s). Award Amount: $740. Annual scholarship created by Greg and Bridget Wehr in memory of their daughter. Criteria: Graduating seniors of Mt. Vernon High School with a maximum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale). Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree in elementary education at the University of Southern Indiana upon high school graduation. Selection will be based on applicant's history of working hard to achieve aspirations and goals, high moral character, academic performance, and the required essay. Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Perseverance (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages) describing the effort and diligence involved in order to pursue past and/or future aspirations and goals. Letter of recommendation in support of the applicant's high moral character (e.g. examples of applicant's demonstration of ethics, honesty, integrity, etc.) Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. Award Amount: $1,000. Robby Wilson Memorial Scholarship Annual scholarship created in memory of Robby Wilson by his father, Tim Wilson, his sisters, Jodi Moore and Wendy Wilson, and his brother, Jason Wilson. Criteria: Graduating seniors of New Harmony High School with a minimum 2.5 grade point average (4.0 scale) in English, math, social studies, and science with plans to attend any two- or four-year degree-granting institution. Selection will be based on financial need, level of involvement in community service and/or athletics, hardship situations, and the required essay. Preference will be given to students planning to major in world history, business, foreign language, or areas related to writing. Supplemental Requirements: Statement of Aspirations and Educational Goals (not to exceed two typewritten, double-spaced pages). Completion of the "Financial Assistance Questionnaire." Diane Riddle in memory of her parents, Edward and Norma Dierlam, and her brother Larry Dierlam. Criteria: Graduating seniors of North Posey High School with a minimum 2.5 grade point average (4.0 scale) in core subjects (English, math, social studies, and science) planning to attend any two-year or four-year post-secondary accredited Indiana State institution. Selection will be based on financial need. Three scholarships will be awarded. A history or major in agriculture is desired in at least one of the three recipients.
